Do not use opioid or narcotic pain meds. These medications sometimes cause low blood oxygen levels in even normal patients. This can seriously hurt the amount of oxygen you get in a night if you have sleep apnea. Narcotics and opiates are sedating and should be avoided if you have sleep apnea. The difficult breathing that accompanies sleep apnea leads to lower than normal oxygen levels. Combining low oxygen caused by sleep apnea with medication that causes respiratory depression has a compounding effect, which can be life-threatening. Give your throat and jaw muscles a workout. Weaknesses in these particular muscle groups can make your sleep apnea much worse, so it’s a good idea to learn some targeted exercises to treat them. Try some exercises for a while and see if it helps you. If you are not having any luck managing your apnea, you may want to talk to a doctor about more radical treatments. Conventional treatments may not work for you, and other options do exist, including surgery that results in enlargement of the air passage. If you have sleep apnea, don’t turn to sleeping pills. This is because they can actually worsen your sleep apnea symptoms. These pills cause the muscles to get relaxed too much, which ends up making the problems much worse. Instead of drinking alcohol or taking other drugs, try using melatonin to get to sleep easily.
